Trouble in the High Court
Last week Wisconsin's Supreme Court deadlocked on the charge that their Justice Michael Gableman violated the Court's judicial code of conduct by running a negative campaign ad that knowingly slandered the background of his opponent. The vote was flawed. Three of the seven justices did not address directly the ethics question, finding instead that his speech was protected by the First Amendment. They were right, it was, but the judicial code demands more. These justices were obviously avoiding the ethics question. What lies ahead for the Court on this issue is unknown at present, but obviously the integrity of the court is in serious trouble.
The underlying problem is that the Court has become highly politicized in recent years, with some justices leaning towards a conservative special interest group that has heavily supported "their candidates" in the last two elections. Though situations like this don't directly affect the lives of you and me, they are unsettling, at least to me. We need clean, honest government. We need leaders with integrity, whose loyalty lies primarily in the best interests of the people of our state. Unfortunately, from time to time, corrupt leaders arise and deny us this blessing. We public citizens too often don't pay attention and protest until things get bad.
Let's include in our prayers in the months and years ahead that God will strengthen those leaders everywhere that seek to do his will here on the earth and work in the best interests of all the people they represent, and that God will also protect us from those whose motives are selfish, impure, and/or evil in intent. And let us become watchful. We cannot afford to turn our heads aside and ignore what is going on, if we want a just society.
Do you have other suggestions to address this problem? If so, let me know and I will share them.
Thankful that God is in control,
Margaret
