Why the Gay Marriage Movement?
It astounds me over and over again that , in a few short decades, modern society has had the audacity to overturn the basic social institution we live by. Yes, I recognize that we have become a people characterized by arrogance and extreme self-possession, but we are also supposedly better-educated than ever before. Haven't we learned anything from history, psychology, and sociology? Or is it that we are so blinded by our desire to "do it my way" that we can't even see the call of common sense? Apparently we, or at least some of us, are still not educated well enough.
Last week a California judge overturned his state's Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage. He said it was unconstitutional because marriage is a "civil right." Oh? I thought civil rights are given to individuals, so they have an opportunity to live in a humane way in society. The issue of marriage is in another ball park, judge. He said people are against gay marriage because they are prejudiced. Lord, please deliver me from people who make assumptions about what other people are thinking and feeling and pass them off as facts! Is that why so many states have passed a definition of marriage as being between a man and woman? I don't think so. All those voters can't be prejudiced. He said gays are able to parent as well as heterosexual couples. Judge, you need to look at the studies that have been done, especially those that deal with what children have to say about that. Every child needs and wants a father and a mother, and though that ideal fails at times, we owe it to our children to give them what will serve them best as often as we can.
Lord, please help societies around the world to see the true issues in gay marriage and parenting and, at the same time, help those Christians and others inclined towards non-acceptance or rejection of gays to see them as Your beloveds, too.
Wanting more clarity, truth, and wisdom on the gay marriage issue,
Margaret
